Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - ADHD

What is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that typically begins in childhood and often persists into adulthood. It is characterized by a persistent pattern of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that significantly impacts daily functioning and quality of life.
The symptoms of ADHD can vary in severity and presentation, but generally fall into three main categories:
  1. Inattention: Individuals with ADHD often struggle with maintaining focus, sustaining attention, and organizing tasks. They may have difficulty following instructions, completing tasks, or staying organized. They may frequently lose things, appear forgetful, and have difficulty with time management.
  2. Hyperactivity: Hyperactive symptoms include excessive restlessness, fidgeting, and an inability to stay seated or engaged in quiet activities. Individuals with ADHD may feel a constant need to be in motion or talk excessively. They may have difficulty engaging in activities that require a calm, quiet demeanor.
  3. Impulsivity: Impulsive behaviors in ADHD include acting without thinking, interrupting others, and difficulty waiting for their turn. Individuals with ADHD may exhibit impulsive decision-making, blurting out answers, or engaging in risky behaviors without considering the consequences.
ADHD can significantly impact various areas of life, including academic and occupational performance, relationships, and overall well-being. Individuals with ADHD may struggle with completing tasks, meeting deadlines, and maintaining relationships due to their difficulties with attention, focus, and impulse control.

Is adult ADHD common?
According the American Psychiatric Association, It is estimated that 2.5 % of adults have ADHD and have gone undiagnosed.

Is ADHD genetic?

The exact causes of ADHD are not fully understood, but it is believed to result from a combination of genetic, environmental, and neurological factors. Research suggests that imbalances in certain brain chemicals, particularly dopamine and norepinephrine, may play a role in the development of ADHD.

How is ADHD Diagnosed

ADHD is typically diagnosed by healthcare professionals, such as qualified mental health counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists, or pediatricians, through a comprehensive evaluation that involves gathering information from multiple sources, including self-report questionnaires, interviews with the individual and their family, and observations of their behavior. How is ADHD treated?

Treatment for ADHD often involves a multimodal approach, combining behavioral interventions, psychoeducation, and medication. Behavioral interventions may include parent training, individual therapy, and school-based support to help manage symptoms and develop effective coping strategies. Medications, such as stimulant medications (e.g., methylphenidate, amphetamines) or non-stimulant medications (e.g., atomoxetine, bupropion), may be prescribed to help manage symptoms by increasing attention and reducing impulsivity and hyperactivity.
It's important to note that ADHD is a complex and heterogeneous condition, and its presentation and treatment can vary from person to person. Consulting with a healthcare professional is crucial for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management of ADHD.

Neurochemistry of ADHD

A body of evidence suggests there are several causes of ADHD. A distinguishing characteristic of ADHD is low levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine which is one of the chemicals in the brain. Due to this lack of dopamine, people with ADHD are "chemically wired" to seek more, says John Ratey, M.D., professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School in Boston. Low levels of dopamine may be due to having an increased amount of dopamine transporters. The lower levels of dopamine could be a result of having too many of the transporters that take dopamine out of their brain cells.
