Bipolar II Traits Screener (Narrative, Self-Scoring)

This educational screener uses a narrative + checklist format to explore hypomanic features often seen in Bipolar II. It is not diagnostic and is not the official BSDS/HCL-32.

Instructions

Read each statement. Check the box if it has described you for a distinct period in your life (even if not current). Then rate how much these experiences have caused problems.

Narrative Checklist

At times I have felt unusually cheerful, upbeat, or energetic compared to my normal self. I needed less sleep than usual but still felt rested and active. I became more talkative than usual or words seemed to flow quickly. My thoughts raced or jumped rapidly from one idea to another. I felt more confident, bold, or self-assured than normal. I was more active or productive than usual, taking on many tasks at once. I was more social, outgoing, or flirtatious than usual. I became easily distracted by outside events or unimportant details. I felt unusually creative or full of new ideas and plans. I spent more money than usual or made impulsive purchases I later questioned. I took chances or did things that others might consider risky or unwise. My interest in sex or romantic activity was higher than usual. I felt unusually irritable or impatient despite having high energy. I felt more goal-driven and focused on projects or plans. Others noticed I was “not my usual self” during these times. My mood could switch from upbeat to down, with periods of low mood or fatigue. I became unusually organized, fastidious, or perfectionistic for a while. I felt less anxious or more carefree than usual during these periods. These periods were clearly different from my everyday baseline.

Educational screening only; not diagnostic. Consider follow-up with standardized tools (e.g., MDQ) and a structured clinical interview (e.g., SCID-5 or MINI) to evaluate for Bipolar II and differential diagnoses.
