Eye-Tracking Memory Recall Exercise
Mark Zauss • Double Board Certified Counseling Services, Inc.
Goal: Retrain the brain to associate eye movement direction with memory type (recent vs. long-term), supporting neuroplasticity, oculomotor control, and recall specificity.
Step-by-Step Instructions
-
Step 1. Warm-Up: Eye Orientation Awareness
- Place two sticky notes or colored dots:
- Upper Right = Recent Memory
- Upper Left = Long-Term Memory
- Without moving the head, move eyes between the two points for 5–10 repetitions.
- Place two sticky notes or colored dots:
-
Step 2. Recent Memory Recall Practice
- With eyes to the UPPER RIGHT, recall something from the last 24 hours (e.g., breakfast, a conversation, an activity).
- Hold gaze while describing the memory; repeat for 3–5 memories.
-
Step 3. Long-Term Memory Recall Practice
- Shift eyes to the UPPER LEFT, recall a childhood or long-term memory (e.g., favorite toy, first school).
- Hold gaze while recalling; repeat for 3–5 memories.
-
Step 4. Integrated Alternation Drill
- Alternate prompts for 5–10 rounds:
- Eyes right: “What did you do yesterday morning?”
- Eyes left: “What was your childhood home like?”
- Alternate prompts for 5–10 rounds:
-
Step 5. Anchoring & Reinforcement
- After each recall, touch the temple on the same side as the gaze (tactile anchor).
- Say aloud: “Recent → Right. Past → Left.” (verbal anchor).
-
Step 6. Progression
- Start with therapist-provided prompts, then transition to self-directed categories.
- Gradually remove the sticky-note cues so the association becomes automatic.
Quick Reference
| Eye Position | Memory Type | Example Prompt |
|---|---|---|
| Upper Right | Recent Memory | “What did you eat for breakfast today?” |
| Upper Left | Long-Term Memory | “What was your favorite childhood toy?” |
Therapist Tips
Session length: 5–10 minutes to avoid visual fatigue.
Tracking progress: Note when gaze shifts begin occurring appropriately without prompts.
If dizziness or eye strain occurs, pause, blink gently 5–10 times, and resume later.
