Parts Work Therapy Worksheet | Cognitive Dissonance & Trauma Healing

Parts Work Therapy Worksheet | Cognitive Dissonance & Trauma Healing

This parts work therapy worksheet helps clients understand the emotional “parts” that become activated during stress, trauma, invalidation, rejection, or relational conflict. Through scoreable cognitive dissonance and trauma-response assessments, clients can identify vulnerable inner parts, explore protective responses, reduce shame, and create a compassionate third-person narrative that supports emotional regulation, self-understanding, and healing.

Parts Work Therapy Worksheet | Cognitive Dissonance & Trauma Self-Assessment

Parts Work Therapy Worksheet

Understanding Inner Parts, Cognitive Dissonance, Trauma Responses, and Third-Person Healing Narratives

This educational worksheet helps clients identify conflicted emotional parts, reduce shame, understand trauma reactions, and practice describing painful experiences with greater distance and compassion.

What Is Parts Work?

Parts work is a compassionate way of understanding that people often have different “parts” of themselves that carry different emotions, memories, fears, needs, and protective strategies. A person may have one part that wants connection, another part that wants to avoid conflict, another part that feels angry, and another part that feels ashamed or unworthy.

Important idea: Parts are not “bad.” They are often protective. Even painful responses such as shutting down, people-pleasing, overexplaining, self-blame, avoidance, anger, or emotional numbness may have developed to help the person survive, reduce conflict, or prevent further emotional injury.

Examples of Common Parts

The Wounded Part

Carries hurt, rejection, fear, abandonment, humiliation, or grief. This part may feel young, powerless, or unseen.

The Protector Part

Attempts to prevent pain by avoiding vulnerability, staying guarded, becoming angry, or shutting down emotionally.

The Pleasing Part

Tries to keep others calm or prevent rejection by over-apologizing, over-functioning, or ignoring personal needs.

The Critical Part

Uses self-judgment to try to prevent mistakes, embarrassment, conflict, or abandonment.

The Logical Part

Analyzes what happened and may minimize emotions in an effort to stay in control.

The Healthy Adult Self

Observes, validates, protects, and helps the other parts without shame, panic, or avoidance.

Cognitive Dissonance and Trauma

Cognitive dissonance happens when two conflicting beliefs, feelings, or realities exist at the same time. In emotionally abusive, invalidating, neglectful, or traumatic situations, a client may feel confused because one part of them knows they were hurt, while another part tries to excuse, minimize, justify, or blame themselves for what happened.

Examples of Cognitive Dissonance

Part A: “That person hurt me.”

Part B: “Maybe I’m too sensitive.”

Part A: “I felt ignored and devalued.”

Part B: “Maybe they didn’t mean it.”

Part A: “I need boundaries.”

Part B: “If I set boundaries, I will be rejected.”

Part A: “I deserve respect.”

Part B: “Maybe I should just tolerate it to keep peace.”

Clinical reminder: Cognitive dissonance can be especially intense when the person who caused pain was also someone the client loved, depended on, trusted, feared, needed, or wanted approval from.

Scorable Cognitive Dissonance Assessment

Rate each statement from 0 to 4. This is not a diagnosis. It is a reflection tool to help identify internal conflict.

Scorable Trauma Response Assessment

Rate each statement from 0 to 4 based on the past two weeks or when thinking about the stressful situation.

Identifying the Part That Is Speaking

When a client says, “I felt ignored and devalued,” parts work invites the client to slow down and identify which part of the self is carrying that feeling. This helps the client move from emotional flooding into compassionate observation.

Part Identification Worksheet

Creating a Third-Person Narrative

Third-person narration can help clients describe painful experiences with less emotional flooding. Instead of saying, “I was ignored and devalued,” the client practices saying, “Sam was ignored and devalued.” This creates emotional distance while still validating the experience.

Purpose: The goal is not to detach from feelings or deny pain. The goal is to observe the emotional experience with compassion, clarity, and protection from the Healthy Adult Self.

Example

First-person statement: “I felt like I was ignored and devalued.”

Third-person parts-work statement: “Sam was ignored and devalued. A younger, vulnerable part of Sam felt unseen, dismissed, and emotionally unsafe. This part may have been around 10 years old and carried a strong fear that his needs did not matter.”

Third-Person Narrative Formula

Step 1: Name the client in the third person.

Step 2: Describe what happened without minimizing it.

Step 3: Identify the activated part.

Step 4: Estimate the age of the part.

Step 5: Identify the vulnerability level.

Step 6: Describe what the part felt, feared, and needed.

Step 7: Allow the Healthy Adult Self to respond with compassion and protection.

Third-Person Narrative Builder

Parts Dialogue Exercise

This exercise helps the client separate the emotional part from the Healthy Adult Self. The goal is to listen to the part without letting that part run the entire emotional system.

Suggested Reflection Questions

For the Wounded Part

What did this part need to hear at the time but did not hear?

For the Protector Part

What is this part trying to prevent from happening again?

For the Pleasing Part

What does this part fear would happen if it said no?

For the Critical Part

How is criticism being used as a mistaken form of protection?

Clinical Use Suggestions

This worksheet may be used in session to help clients slow down emotional reactions, identify trauma-linked parts, reduce cognitive dissonance, and create a more compassionate narrative. It may be especially helpful for clients recovering from emotional neglect, narcissistic abuse, relational trauma, invalidation, grief, rejection sensitivity, shame, attachment wounds, or chronic self-blame.

Therapeutic goal: The client learns to say, “A part of me feels this way,” rather than “All of me is this feeling.” This creates space for choice, grounding, compassion, and healing.
